Tasty Low-carb Dips and Accompaniments

On long winter nights, all I want to do is eat junk food and watch movies under a blanket. I’m being honest – and I’m not ashamed of that fact! The problem is, I always want to reach for the popcorn, or chips and dip (or any other sugar and MSG riddled foods I can get my hands on) – and that is most certainly not the way to shift the extra pounds I put on over the holiday season!

If you’re like me, and you’re following a low carb or ketogenic diet, you’ve probably been looking for a few new and exciting foods and recipes to try, as we begin the new year and our resolutions seem that much more achievable. But, as I’ve mentioned on this blog a number of times, finding keto-friendly snacks can prove to be pretty difficult (check out the post ‘Keto-friendly Snacks: At Home or on the Go’ for some more inspiration). Most snacks are full of sugar or are grain-based, which is obviously a no-go for a low carb diet.

These delicious low carb dips and accompaniments however, taste amazing, and are very low in carbs. Try them out for yourself!

Sour Cream and Bleu Cheese Dip with Chicken Wings

This dip is simple to make, tastes absolutely amazing, and can actually work just as well when consumed as a main meal. Add in a few chicken drumsticks and a keto-friendly side salad, and you’ve pretty much got yourself a banquet! Here’s what you need:

  • 200g of bleu cheese of your choice
  • 200ml of fresh soured cream
  • A handful of diced chives
  • Seasoning
  • Chicken wings
  • A dash of low-carb hot sauce or BBQ sauce
  • Celery sticks

  • Take your chicken wings, season them slightly, and bake in an oven until virtually cooked
  • In a separate bowl, melt down a large knob of butter and combine it with a generous splash of your favourite low-carb hot sauce
  • Once the wings are nearly cooked, soak them in the butter and hot sauce mixture, leave to cool, and then refrigerate for an hour
  • As your wings are cooling, take your bleu cheese and soured cream and combine together in a deep bowl, roughly mashing up the cheese. Alternatively, you can blend them together in a food processor
  • Once mixed, add a handful of diced chives, and mix again
  • Take your wings out of the fridge, and bake again in the oven for 10 – 12 minutes
  • Remove from the oven, and serve with the dip and fresh celery sticks

Low-carb Creamy Chive & Spinach Dip

This recipe is not only delicious, it is also very good for you as the spinach and other veggies are packed full of vitamins and minerals. So there’s no excuse for not eating your greens! Here’s what you need:

  • 10 oz of thawed and drained frozen spinach
  • Half bunch of fresh, chopped chives
  • ¾ of a cup of mayo
  • ½ a cup of sour cream
  • ½ a cup of finely diced celery
  • ½ a cup of finely diced red onions
  • 1 tea spoon of ranch dressing
  • Zest of 1 lemon
  • Seasoning

  • Thaw your spinach, drain as much water as possible, and place into a bowl
  • Take the rest of your ingredients, and mix together until a thick and creamy consistency has been achieved
  • Garnish with lemon zest (adding a squeeze of the lemon too if you like)
  • Use as a dip with fresh veggies, or even with finely sliced portions of meat (you could even dig it up using pieces of beef jerky)

The above are two simple recipes to try out when you’re feeling adventurous in the kitchen. If you’re more like me, however, and are only very rarely struck by the inspiration to cook, then you’ll be happy to know that you can purchase ready-made (and great tasting) keto-friendly dips and dressings right here!

So, here are some ‘lazy’ options and ideas for accompaniments, for those of us who just want everything on a plate. And there’s no shame in that J
